My name is Marina Engberg. I’m the Harbor Master and maker here at Marina’s Yarnharbor. I live and knit in south central Michigan, with my husband and two cats. My love of knitting is what moves me to make beautiful things and to share my work with the world.
After watching my aunt knit a pair of intricate colorwork socks, I pestered her to teach me and, at 17, I was immediately hooked on this “grandma” hobby. What followed was a knitting flurry of scarves, a few quick (but rather sad) hats, and more dish rags than anyone ever needed. In the years since, my repertoire has expanded to include sweaters, socks, and shawls.
My favorite thing to knit is anything with lace. As each lace project transforms from a wrinkly vague repeat of stitches and yarn overs to a beautiful open lattice of art, I’m reminded of how the outcomes of our work can surprise and delight us. And it is this constant discovery that keeps the yarn on my needles.

Speaking of yarn, the majority of the fibers that I knit with are natural fibers like cotton or wool. Merino wool is a staple fiber in my work, and alpaca is also common in my preferred yarn blends. Cashmere and silk are some of my favorite fibers that I typically reserve for special projects. Some of my work may include synthetic material, but only when absolutely necessary for the structural integrity of the finished object.
The Yarnharbor is also an Instagram account, and a podcast on YouTube. Over on Instagram, you’ll find behind the scenes images and short form content. On YouTube, I share a more in-depth look at works-in-progress and finished objects. I’m available on any of those platforms if you’ve got any questions or just want to chat. You’ll also be able to find me at various events in Michigan, where I’ll have my handknit goods available for purchase. Thank you for visiting Marina’s Yarnharbor!
